Description
This paper proposes that historically and contemporarily African-Americans were and are severely underrepresented in the Eurocentric press, are portrayed stereotypically, depicted in low-status occupational roles and denied news or public affairs programs to adequately serve their informational needs. Specifically, the social forces identified by the Kerner Commission Report, directly and continuously affect the level of participation of African-Americans in television news media. Furthermore, where African-Americans were placcd in programming policy making positions, subsequent news content and coverage displayed an Afrocentric perspective.
