Description
HoxH primers were examined and designed to identify the hoxH gene in several species of cyanobacteria. This particular gene encodes the large subunit of the nickel-iron hydrogenase (NiFe), which is responsible for the production of hydrogen. Partial and full hoxH DNA and 16sRNA sequences were collected for all available cyanobacteria in GenBank at the Nation Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). The sequences were aligned and examined in CLUSTAL X 2.0 and SEQUENCHER 4.10.1. Once several potential primers were created, Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) was used to identify the most promising primers, with the ability to detect a variety of cyanobacterial genera. Ultimately the primers created will be used in future research of environmental soil samples collected on the Maxton Plains Alvar. McNair Scholar Project. Faculty Advisor: Colores, Gregory Michael, Biology.
