Ritual; Rites and ceremonies; Hockey -- History; Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (Hockey Team); Ottawa Senators (Hockey Team); Sports -- Sociological aspects;
To explore hockey ritual introduction and strengthening, this article focuses on the dedicatory ceremonies for two National Hockey League franchises: the Ottawa Senators in 1992 and the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in 1993. Though both teams would play the same sport in the same league, the bedrock of Anaheim's tradition was the parent company's success at animated (rather than sport) spectacle. Ottawa's heritage, in contrast, was historic achievement in the sport itself. Each franchise had a hockey ritual to project, but one that had to be reconciled with its own and its target audience's background.
